A wooden 13x13 Go board with a few black and white stones near the edges and the title BADUK in the middle

BADUK

🎮 Play now

BADUK is a free Go game on a 13x13 board where you climb from 18 kyu to 9 dan, right in the browser.

You play black and move first. Tap a point to place a stone; surround a group's last liberty to capture it. Suicide and immediate ko recapture are not allowed. When both players pass, the board is counted with 6.5 points komi for white.

You start against an 18 kyu opponent. Win and NEXT takes you up one rank; lose and you play that rank again. Higher ranks read further ahead: at 9 dan the opponent plays out tens of thousands of games to the end before each move. Your rank stays saved in the browser.

Captured stones pop off the board. Capture several at once for GREAT or AMAZING. Press 2 PLAYERS on the title screen and two people take turns on one phone or PC.

Frequently asked questions

What are the controls?

Tap or click where two lines cross to place a stone. On a phone, the row and column under your finger light up and the stone goes down when you lift your finger. Press PASS when there is nothing left to play; when both players pass, the board is counted.

Can a complete beginner play?

Yes. The 18 kyu opponent reads only a little ahead, so knowing the rules is enough to win. A red X appears on a spot you cannot play.

How many ranks are there, and do they match real Go ranks?

There are 27 steps, from 18 kyu through 1 kyu up to 9 dan. Win and you move up one; lose and you play the same rank again. Higher ranks read further ahead. They are steps of opponent strength inside this game, not official ranks.

How is the game scored?

When both players pass, dead stones are removed and territory plus living stones are counted, with 6.5 points komi for white. Territory is marked with small squares on the board and both scores are shown. A side that is far behind may resign early.

Can two people play, or play online?

Two people can play. Press 2 PLAYERS on the title screen and take turns on one phone or PC. There is no online play between different devices.
