2048 is a free web number puzzle game: slide the tiles so matching numbers merge, and keep doubling until you reach 2048. It runs in your browser with no download.

Hand-shaped clay tiles sit on a green cutting mat on a wooden table, each with a number pressed in like a stamp. Swipe up, down, left or right and every tile slides as far as it can. When two tiles with the same number bump into each other they squash into one tile worth double, clay crumbs fly and your score goes up. Every move adds a new 2 or 4 in an empty square.

There are four boards: 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 and 6x6. Reach 256 on 3x3, 2048 on 4x4, 4096 on 5x5 and 8192 on 6x6 to clear them. Smaller boards fill up fast and are harder; bigger boards take longer. Clear all four to reach the final screen.

You get three undos per game, and if the board locks up with no moves left you can still use what you have left to take a move back. A game in progress is saved in your browser and picks up where you left off, and each board keeps its own best score.

Good for — a few minutes of thinking on your phone, kids and adults who like number puzzles, and 2048 players who want a bigger or smaller board than the classic 4x4.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play 2048?

Swipe or use the arrow keys to push every tile to one side. Two tiles with the same number that meet add up into one. Each move drops a 2 or a 4 into an empty square, and the game ends when the board is full and nothing can move.

Where do new tiles appear?

In one of the empty squares, picked evenly. Nine times out of ten it is a 2 and once it is a 4. We drew 30,000 tiles on each board to check that every square comes up about equally often.

Can I keep playing after I make 2048?

No. Reaching the goal tile clears that board and the game moves on to the next one. You can pick a cleared board on the title screen and start it again from scratch.

How many undos do I get?

Three per game. Each press takes back one move, and you can take back up to three in a row. Starting a new game gives you three again.

Why is the 3x3 goal only 256?

With just nine squares the board fills up so fast that 2048 is close to impossible. So 3x3 stops at 256, while the roomier 5x5 and 6x6 boards go up to 4096 and 8192.

Is there a 5x5 and 6x6 version of 2048 online?

Yes. Pick the board on the title screen with the arrows. Each board saves on its own, so you can switch from 4x4 to 6x6 and come back without losing the game you had going.
