Korean History Quiz
Korean History Quiz is a free browser game where you meet 120 events of Korean history in order, pick what really happened, and build every country from prehistory to today's Republic of Korea. No download, it starts right in your browser.
On the left is a pixel art village map, on the right a sheet of hanji paper. A person from the period walks up and tells you about an event, and you pick the real history from five choices. First comes a Paleolithic elder with a hand axe, later a village elder raising a dolmen, then a priest telling the founding story of Dangun.
Get it right and a red stamp lands on the sheet while something from that event appears on the map: a hut, a dolmen, the gate of Wanggeomseong, the Gwanggaeto Stele, a trading ship at Byeokrando, a highway. The map changes with the times too, from dirt paths to stone streets, and finally asphalt and the Taegukgi.
Get it wrong and you read one line of history gone sideways, like envoys grinding ink all night over a treaty, or a general who spent so long naming his forts that winter came first. The right answer gets a dashed outline, and either way the year and story of the event appear as the Historian's Record. Every event you get right goes into the record book, up to 120.

There are twelve parts with ten questions each. Each part ends with a score, and 80 or more plays a fanfare for the country you built. Below 80, you go back to the first question of that part.
| Part | Period | Country you build |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prehistory, Gojoseon, early states | Gojoseon |
| 2 | Goguryeo | Goguryeo |
| 3 | Baekje | Baekje |
| 4 | Silla and Gaya | Silla |
| 5 | Unified Silla and Balhae | the North-South States |
| 6 | Early Goryeo | Goryeo |
| 7 | Late Goryeo | Late Goryeo |
| 8 | Early Joseon | Joseon |
| 9 | Late Joseon | Late Joseon |
| 10 | Opening ports, Korean Empire | the Korean Empire |

The questions are built on events that the advanced level of the Korean History Proficiency Test has asked about. No exam wording is copied; each event is written fresh in the voice of someone who lived it. The game is not affiliated with the National Institute of Korean History or the Korean History Proficiency Test.

Frequently asked questions
Are these real Korean History Proficiency Test questions?
No. The game uses the events the advanced test has asked about as its backbone, and every line is written fresh in the voice of someone from that time. It is not affiliated with the National Institute of Korean History or the test.
How many questions are there?
Twelve parts from prehistory to the Republic of Korea, ten questions each, 120 in all. Every question has five choices, always in the same order.
What happens if I score under 80?
You see that the country of that part was not built, and Try Again sends you back to the first question of that part. Countries you already built and things on the map stay.
Does it show the right answer when I miss?
Yes. Your pick is crossed out and the right choice gets a dashed outline. Below that you read one line of history gone sideways and the Historian's Record with the real year and story.
Is the in-game grade the same as the real test level?
No. After the last part, 80% or more correct gives Advanced Lv.1, 70% Lv.2 and 60% Lv.3, only inside the game. It has nothing to do with real test results.
How does it end?
Clear the final Republic of Korea part with 80 or more and you get You built today's Republic of Korea with a fanfare, plus a result card with correct answers, splits, in-game grade and title that you can save or share.
