Hiragana & Katakana Practice is a free web app where you see the kana chart, hear every sound, trace the stroke order and work up to real sentences. It opens straight in the browser with nothing to install.
How to learn hiragana here
- Start with the Kana chart and tap any cell to hear how it sounds.
- Work through Practice from the A row. Each stage shows the new characters first, then quizzes you, and anything you miss comes back later.
- Open Writing to watch the stroke order and trace it yourself. Each stroke is checked, and drawing one backwards replays the order.
- Once the characters stick, move on to Words and Sentences. Sentences use real kanji with the reading printed above.

Do I need to install anything?
No. Open the link in your browser and it starts. No app and no sign-up.
Is it free?

Does it work on a phone?
Yes, on phones and computers. For writing practice you trace with your finger.
Does it teach stroke order?
Yes. In Writing practice the stroke order is drawn once for each character, then you trace it and every stroke is checked. Drawing a stroke backwards is not accepted and the order is shown again. All 46 hiragana, all 46 katakana and the voiced characters are included.
Can I hear the pronunciation?
Yes. Tap a character, word or sentence to hear it. The audio is pre-recorded, so it plays instantly, and you can turn it off with the sound button.
Do the sentences use kanji?
Yes, written the way they really are, with the reading (furigana) printed above each kanji. The word cards show readings too, so you can read them without knowing the kanji.
Is my progress saved?
It is saved in your browser. Open it again on the same device and you carry on. Nothing is sent to a server.
